Hong Kong all-square with Oman in opening game
Hong Kong has forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with Oman in the opening game of the Asian Games Qualifying Tournament, the game began with the Hong Kong side starting the game with great confidence and discipline in defense frustrating the Omani side and Hong Kong side were able to deliver with some excellent counter attacks which managed to force six penalty corners in the first 20 minutes of the game. The Oman defenders were able to break down the penalty corner on three attempts with one should have resulted in a penalty stroke after the Omani runner managed to have both his hands held on drag flicking specialist Arif Ali whilst he was about to take a shot from point blank range, Ashgar Ali (Senachi) had a brilliant strike deflected out to the base line by the line defender, Arif also had a high drag flick attempt saved by a brave defender. Arif finally managed to find the net on the last penalty corner of the half with a low drag well placed on the left side of the goal. With the tournament adopting the new 2 minute green card sin bin rule it was surprising to see the trailing side to finish the half with only one green card to its name given the frequency of dangerous tackles. Hong Kong completed the half with the one nil lead. In the second half both side were struggling with the thirty five degrees of heat and the Oman side exerted more pressure on the Hong Kong defense and was rewarded a field goal after vice captain Shafiq Mirza being caught in possession in the midfield and the attackers went straight towards the circle and taking a first time shot which was lucky to go in on the same spot as the first goal. Hong Kong then owed Goalkeeper Howard Leung to some resolute goalkeeping to keep the side in the game and Harry Bal was unlucky to not score himself on the other end from 4 chances, with 2 outstanding saves from the man of the match Omani goalkeeper. Both sides were unable to add any more goals in the remainder of the half.
The tournament had also adopted the video referral as used in the world cup and EHL, 1 referral will be allowed for each side in the game. Defenders will also be asked to go to the half way line if they break the penalty corners before the injection.
In the following game Sri Lanka only managed a 3-3 draw with Chinese Taipei which has just arrived the night before there first game. Day 1 of the tournament completed with Singapore beating Thailand 5-2. Hosts Bangladesh did not have a scheduled game today and will feature on Sunday after all the teams having a rest day tomorrow.
